Medal of Merit for Blood Donations (MBD)

The MBD is conferred at four classes by the Sovereign on the recommendation of the Honours Council. Each class corresponds to a cumulative number of verified donations of any accepted type (whole blood, plasma, platelets). Each donation must be confirmed by a recognised certifying authority — any blood service worldwide.

Eligibility

  • Open to all authenticated ePortal users with Lifeblood access enabled.
  • Lifeblood access is invitation-only — request via the Office of Citizen Welfare.
  • Each donation must be confirmed by a recognised certifying authority (a blood service or hospital). Self-reported donations without a referenceable authority are not accepted.
  • Whole-blood donations of at least 450 ml count toward the medal threshold. Volumes below 450 ml are recorded but flagged.
  • Plasma, platelets, and other apheresis donations also count, regardless of volume.

How verification works

  1. You submit a donation through the form, including the certifying authority's name and reference number.
  2. Optionally attach proof (donation card, receipt, or letter) — speeds verification.
  3. An officer at the Office of Citizen Welfare reviews your submission. Most are processed within 5 business days.
  4. Once verified, the donation counts toward your medal threshold. Your dashboard updates automatically.
  5. When you cross a threshold, the medal is conferred via the standard honours pipeline. The Sovereign's Chancellery contacts you to issue the citation and arrange presentation.

Frequently asked

Do donations made before joining Lifeblood count?

Yes — historical donations may be entered, provided you have the certifying authority's reference number for each. Officers will contact the authority to confirm if the reference is unfamiliar.

Can donations from outside Kaharagia count?

Yes. Any recognised blood service worldwide is acceptable — NHS Blood and Transplant, the American Red Cross, Croix-Rouge, etc. The certifying authority's name and your donor ID are what officers verify against.

How do I request Lifeblood access?

Use the contact form and select the "National Services" category. Briefly mention that you'd like Lifeblood access enabled. Decisions are usually made within one business day.

What if my donation is revoked?

The reason will appear on the donation detail page. If you believe the revocation was in error, reply via the contact form with the donation reference and any additional proof.

How often can I donate?

That's a medical question — follow your local blood service's guidance. Whole-blood donation intervals are typically 12 weeks (men) and 16 weeks (women), but this varies by jurisdiction. Lifeblood does not enforce minimum intervals.
